IP rating – what is it and why should you choose JLM IP44 switches and sockets

IP Protection – What It Means and Why It’s Important

What is IP protection?
The abbreviation IP stands for Ingress Protection and indicates the degree of protection a device has against external factors such as dust, dirt, or water. This classification is described by the international standard IEC 60529, widely used in electronics, electrical installations, and construction.

The IP rating is presented in the format IPXX, where:

  • The first digit indicates protection against solid objects (e.g., dust, sand),

  • The second digit indicates protection against water and moisture.

First digit – protection against solid objects
Range: 0 to 6

  • IP0X – no protection

  • IP1X – protection against larger objects (e.g., a hand)

  • IP4X – protection against dust particles >1 mm

  • IP6X – completely dust-tight

Second digit – protection against water
Range: 0 to 9

  • IPX0 – no protection

  • IPX2 – protection against dripping water at a 15° angle

  • IPX5 – protection against water jets

  • IPX7 – temporary immersion in water

  • IPX9 – protection against high-pressure and high-temperature water jets

Examples of common IP ratings

  • IP44 – often used in outdoor lighting; protects against small solid objects and water splashes

  • IP65 – dust-tight and resistant to water jets; typical for LED lamps and industrial enclosures

  • IP67 – dust-tight and can be briefly immersed in water; popular in mobile electronics (smartphones, watches)

  • IP68 – maximum protection; long-term immersion under higher pressure

Why the IP rating matters

  • Safety – low-rated devices can be hazardous in humid environments

  • Durability – high protection ensures longer equipment lifespan and resistance to weather

  • Environment suitability – higher IP-rated devices are used in bathrooms, gardens, or food industry environments
